Claude Sonnet 5 was developed to be the most agentic Sonnet model created to date. It can plan, use tools such as browsers and terminals, and operate independently to the extent that previously required larger and more expensive models just a few months ago.

For many developers, the era of agentic AI began with the Sonnet-class models: Claude Sonnet 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7 were the first models to demonstrate very high capabilities in coding and tool use. However, in recent months, the most significant achievements in agentic capabilities have been observed in Opus-class models.

Sonnet 5 significantly narrows this gap: its efficiency approaches that of Opus 4.8, yet at a lower cost. Compared to its predecessor Sonnet 4.6, it provides substantial improvement in key aspects of agentic activity, including reasoning, tool use, coding, and knowledge-based tasks.
